New Class Times!
Shobukan will be shifting to a new schedule of classes on Monday, January 29th. We will be having three separate classes to better accommodate the different ages and levels of our students. They will be as follows.
This class will have our younger beginners. They will be learning fundamentals of judo, focusing on ukemi (breakfalls) and newaza (ground techniqes). Some tachiwaza (standing techniques) will also be taught to prepare them for the Second Class.
This class will consist of color belts and white belts, who have passed the beginner training. Beginners ages 9 - 12 years old will also be in this time frame. Before joining the regular class, beginners will learn fundamentals from an instructor in a special, one to one setting.
This class will include all students ages 13 yrs to adult. In judo, submission techniques are added at age 13 yrs. Students are able to apply shime waza (choking techniques) starting at 13 yrs and kansetsu waza (arm locking techniques) at 15 yrs. Beginners ages 13 yrs to adult will also be in this time frame. Before joining the regular class, beginners will learn fundamentals from an instructor in a special, one to one setting.
*Note: Age is determined by birth year. So all students born in 2012 or later will be in the Second Class, except for beginners born in 2016 or later. Beginners born in 2016 or later will be in the First Class. All students born in 2011 or earlier will be in the Third Class.
**An exception to our age determination is the beginner age of five. Incoming students must have already had their fifth birthday.

Shobukan has returned to regular class times!
We have returned to our regular class times on Monday/Wednesday/Friday as follows:
Beginner class: 5:30 - 6:30 pm, ages 6 - 8 (white belts)
Junior/Adult class: 6:30 - 8:00 pm, ages 8+ (intermediate - adults)
Advanced/Open Practice: 8:00 - 9:30 pm
In re-opening last December 1, 2021 and instituting a vaccination requirement on December 19, 2021, we were very successful in keeping Shobukan safe throughout the Delta and Omicron variants. However, Covid-19 and its variant(s) are still present, so we will continue with our requirements of vaccination/boosters (where applicable) for 5 year olds & above through adults. In addition, masking and hygiene will still be an important part of our plan. We will keep monitoring the situation to lessen restrictions in the future months.
We will be running classes with exercises, drills, uchikomi, newaza and randori as usual. However, masks will still be required due to the close-contact nature of Judo.

Yesterday marked our Head Sensei Dwight Maeda's 50th anniversary with Shobukan Judo Club. Sensei Maeda began his judo career in 1963 at 10 years of age. As an undersized boy, his parents thought he would not last. However, he enjoyed Judo and persevered, attaining his Shodan (Black Belt) at the age of 19. After his competitive days were over, he was an instrumental part of arguably the most successful period in the 105 year history of the club. During his tenure as Assistant Instructor, he helped the club produce two Olympians, along with countless Junior National, Senior National and International level gold medalists.
After a short ceremony honoring Sensei Maeda, a commemorative 50 year koa plaque was presented as a gift from the assistant instructors and senpai. After a few words of encouragement from Sensei Maeda about dedication, loyalty, perseverance and the importance of not quitting, the senior class got underway. The open mat session, however, was cancelled in lieu of a pot luck that lasted well into the night. It's not often in life that someone gets to celebrate a 50 year anniversary, and the party certainly reflected the magnitude of the accomplishment.
Congratulations to Sensei Dwight Maeda on the past 50 years. Gambate' till the next 50!

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that today we announce the passing of Sensei Lance Iida. Sensei Lance touched the lives of so many people, as was evident in the standing-room-only lobby. Most of us had to wait at least 45 minutes to pay our last respects to Sensei Lance and his gracious family, and everyone stayed around long after visiting hours were over to share tears and stories.
Those who knew him best will forever remember his laugh. His memories will always be a part of us. Rest in peace.
Lance Iida
